Panama City, Saturday March 3, 2012.– Mexico moved to the brink of the semifinals at the CONCACAF Under-20 Women's Championship, beating Haiti 10-0 on Saturday.
The result left Mexico with six points in Group A and could clinch a spot in the final eight with a win or draw by Canada against Jamaica in Saturday's second game.
Tanya Samarzich and Natalia Gomez-Junco - who had three -- both scored for a second straight game, and Ariana Martinez and Daniela Solis tallied two apiece as Mexico dominated throughout. Haiti, which won all five matches in Caribbean qualifying by a combined 16-0, lost for the fourth time in five matches at the CONCACAF finals and was all but mathematically eliminated with its second loss and outscored 15-0.
With temperatures again around 88 degrees (31 Celsius) and humidity again at 58 percent, the match began relatively slowly. Mexico had the better of play from the start and went ahead in the 19th minute when Samarzich knocked in a loose ball from the edge of the six-yard box.
Chrystal Martinez served a cross into Gomez-Junco, who was challged by Haiti's Clorene Rateu. The ball fell to Samarzich, who had the opening goal in the sixth minute in Mexico's 3-1 win over Jamaica on Friday.
Martinez scored the first of her to 10 minutes later, heading a free kick from Olivia Jimenez that skimmed over the head of Roselord Borgella.
Jimenez had one of her own in the 32nd, latching onto a ball that bounded out to the top of the Haitian penalty area after Gomez-Junco's cross pinged around the middle of the box. Borgella tried to clear from Samarzich, but Haiti's Ruth Derozin attempted to diffuse the danger, only to send a slow roller for Jimenez to strike first time.
Both sides made only two changes from their starting lineups on Friday. One of the newcomers, Rosa Merida-Medina - who replaced Mexican senior women's national team keeper Cecilia Santiago, was only tested once, a free kick by Ketia Charles in the 42nd minute from 35 meters that she had to punch wide.
Mexico resumed its domination early in the second half with Martinez's second goal in the 48th. Gomez-Junco scored twice in a little over a minute to increase the lead to 6-0 by the 60th, Yamile Franco added antoher in the 64th, and second-half sub Daniela Solis scored in the 70th and 76th.
Gomez-Junco hiked the lead to 10-0 in the 77th but Mexico continued to press for more with Andrea Sanchez hitting the post in the 91st minute.
The victorty equaled Mexico's most lopsided result at the CONCACAF finals, matching a 10-0 win over Panama in 2006. The most one-sided victory in the history of the CONCACAF U-20 Women's Championship finals was a 15-0 win by the United States over Suriname in the inaugural tournament in 2002.
